Arizona’s “Energy Efficient Pilot Program” has reached the maximum limit of 10,000 special license plates issued. There are no plates available at this time.
This pilot program allowed Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Honda Insight owners unrestricted access to the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in Arizona.
Beginning February 9, 2007, for this pilot program, qualifying low emissions, energy efficient vehicles were issued a special Alternative Fuel license plate with a “Hybrid” graphic that permitted the operator to drive in any High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) “carpool” lane in Arizona, regardless of the number of occupants.
This pilot program allowed specific vehicles to utilize the HOV lanes, reducing travel time for those individuals who drive eligible vehicles. The pilot also promoted energy independence and reduced fuel consumption while supporting improved air quality.
As criteria for eligibility, Arizona elected that hybrid vehicles with at least 45% fuel efficiency in combined city-highway fuel economy, based on information provided by the United States Department of Energy and United States Environmental Protection Agency, will qualify for the pilot program. The following vehicles (all model years) met the criteria at the start of the program:
- Honda Insight
- Toyota Prius
- Honda Civic Hybrid
What happens when the pilot program ends?
If the program does not become permanent, the Energy Efficient plates will be recalled and you will receive a no-fee replacement plate. If you have any further questions about your alternative fuel specialty plate, please contact us at one of our convenient locations.
